The Bakery Expands

Our Executive Director and Co-Founder Fortunate, has been tirelessly working to get the bakery set up and operational. Below is the most recent update about these efforts.

"Margaret & Emma Bakery has been our biggest motivation this year! In the beginning, the idea of running a business within a non-profit organization seemed as crazy as it sounds. None the less, we had to do it if not for the sustainability of the organization, at least for the good of the wonderful women who would get to earn an income from working there!

In 2022, we managed to train at least 30 women in baking skills including 13 people with physical disabilities. From the 30 women, Margaret & Emma bakery has employed four women who are now running the day-to-day activities of the bakery. The bakery is open six days a week making a variety of products such as half cakes (mandazi), cakes, different types of tea bites, buns, chapattis and samosas and most recently, potato crisps.

The market for bakery products is a competitive one as we have to compete with well established branded bakeries within the same area. This has left us with primarily suppling our products to school canteens. This is a challenge because we are only in business during school time. The lack of easy transportation to the markets has not made our efforts any easier but we are very grateful for how far we have progressed.

We dream of opening a café in the near future next to our bakery to increase the sales of our fresh baked goods. We are optimistic that the bakery will grow with time creating more jobs for the women as well as contribute to the sustainability of other organizational activities."

If you would like to support the bakery, are looking for fresh baked goods in the Kabale region, or if you have questions, please send us a message.
