About

Margaret & Emma (M&E) is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) working to help women become more independent in their daily lives. We work with groups spread across five districts in southwestern Uganda.

In February 2020, we started our work in Uganda by providing emergency aid to our most vulnerable groups. Our next project was supplying reading glasses to elderly artisans in women's groups. Within a month, we had requests for skills training that would allow groups to start their own businesses.

In 2021, we decided to begin training groups in catering, and we were able to train them in their own communities. In 2022, we established a bakery, and began training groups at our headquarters in Kabale, Uganda.  In 2023, we arranged tailoring training for one of our catering groups in Kihihi, Uganda.

September 2024 we established a tailoring center at our headquarters where we train women in sewing, tailoring, and knitting skills. Tailoring is a huge market in Uganda, and tailors are employed to make uniforms for school children, clothing for special events, etc. With their new skills, women can start their own businesses and earn a stable income.

We include financial literacy training in all of our courses. This is a part of our effort to support vulnerable women in their financial independence.

Since late 2024, we have been able to partner with other NGOs to offer support to vulnerable communities. We hosted women's health seminars, offered menstrual health education for students and rural communities, and provided menstrual supplies for rural communities. We were able to do this with funding and supplies from other organizations. We have continued these efforts into 2025, and plan to expand our outreach into 2026.

We are currently fundraising to expand our training center The setup costs are high, but the long-term benefits are enormous. Go to our Projects page to see a breakdown of our expenses for the training center.
