About

Margaret & Emma (M&E) is an organization working to help women become more independent in their daily lives. We work with groups spread across five districts in southwestern Uganda.

In February 2020, we started our work in Uganda by providing emergency aid to our most vulnerable groups. Our next project was supplying reading glasses to elderly artisans in women's groups. Within a month, we had requests for skills training that would allow groups to start their own businesses.

After much discussion, we decided to begin training groups in catering, baking, tailoring, and hairdressing. These are the skills most requested by the groups, and will offer the best opportunity for these women to flourish in their communities. As a part of their training, we also require financial literacy programs to help women become financially independent long-term.

We currently operate a bakery at our headquarters in Kabale, Uganda that is managed by women who completed our baking training. The bakery supplies baked goods to several local schools and small shops.

We recently opened crafts shop at our headquarters that sells handmade goods from our groups. Not all of our group members have the ability to work, sometimes because they live too far from time, and other times because of illness or disability. Selling crafts allows these women to work on their schedule, and in a way that best supports their skills and abilities.

We are in the process of establishing a tailoring center where we will train women in sewing and tailoring skills. Tailoring is a huge market in Uganda, and tailors are employed to make uniforms for school children, clothing for special events, and wedding dresses. With their new skills, women can tap into the tailoring market to make everything from clothing to household goods such as napkins and bedding.

We are currently fundraising to expand our training center The setup costs are high, but the long-term benefits are enormous. Go to our Project Funding to see a breakdown of our expenses for the office and training center.
